What's new?
28th May 2008: New link added to Tofo blogspot and contributors updated. 3rd May 2008: So I now have my visa for Mozambique after a harrowing trip through the hail to get to the High Commission. I have had tremendous support from family, friends and work colleagues. My final (and it turns out only) sponsored event will be a climb of Mount Snowdon on May 17th. Wish me luck! MISSION Hello there, I have got my official company blurb below but a few personal words first. I am off to Mozambique on June 2nd 2008 for four weeks on a school building project with my company Scott Wilson. This page is set up to raise money to get me there - after that my company does the rest. I have now added a Paypal Option which allows donation to be made online. Now like I said.....the BLURB The Scott Wilson Millennium Project, Scott Wilson’s registered charity, has raised £25,000 for a new school in Mozambique, and now Scott Wilson is sending its staff (that's me!!)to help build it. The money raised by the charity will finance a new three room primary school for the community of Tofo, in the province of Inhambane, Mozambique, providing facilities for over 200 children and will ensure the school’s operation for the next five years. The new facilities are desperately needed, as the children currently study on a dusty cement floor with grass walls and have no desks, chairs, books or pens. The new school will withstand storms and provide the children with the space and infrastructure they need to make the most of their education whilst also providing a suitable location for community activities outside of school hours. From May 2008, 42 employee volunteers will travel to the community and work alongside local labourers to construct the school in line with the Mozambique Ministry of Education’s standard school plans. Typical tasks they will be expected to carry out include hand-mixing cement, brick-laying and learning African plastering techniques. Three teams of staff will work on the build in stages, with construction due to be complete by August 2008. Mike Pidgeon from the Scott Wilson Millennium Project comments, “There are low rates of literacy in Mozambique with only 41% of children completing primary schooling. The Scott Wilson School will provide the children of Tofo with a better quality of life and create a real opportunity for their future. We are very happy to be able to support this worthy cause, not only through our own fundraising but by Scott Wilson staff volunteering to go to Mozambique and help build the school themselves”. The Scott Wilson Millennium Project has partnered with Quest, a specialist company with over 11 years experience in working with community groups and charities on community and conservation projects. They will provide project leaders and organise the schedule, flights and accommodation for the volunteers, who are all raising their own money to fund their trip. The Scott Wilson Millennium Project is a registered charity (number: 1108630), focused upon the relief of poverty, hardship and distress among children in developing countries throughout the world. No profit is made from project activities, and at least 95% of all proceeds collected go directly to help children in the projects supported by the Scott Wilson Millennium Project. |
